History and Mission
First Presbyterian Day School was organized in 1970 by the First Presbyterian Church of Durham to provide high quality childcare and preschool services in Durham. Our school is non-sectarian.
Our primary goal is to provide high quality, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate childcare to a racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse group of children.
Our Philosophy
The Day School approaches the education of young children from a "whole child" perspective by providing activities and games that address the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of each child. This means not only teaching children colors and shapes, but also how to push a ball, feel in control of their bodies, use words to express feelings, and to think creatively about playing with friends.
We want to teach young children that what they have to say and contribute is important, and that what they do affects others. We strive to offer an environment for learning and growth that is suited to the unique needs of your child. We do not push children to learn or do things before they are ready.
Organization and Governance
The Day School is a non-profit corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of Day School parents, members of the First Presbyterian Church, and interested community members. The Board sets policy for the Day School and adopts the annual budget.
Day school daily operations are carried out by its staff: the Executive Director, an Administrative Assistant, classroom lead and assistant teachers, and a Cook.
